H.M.S. Pinafore, 2007

Two young lovers are denied the one thing they most desire... marriage, of course! Can a proud captain's daughter marry the lowly sailor she secretly loves?

And can this beautiful show be as good as ever when it's dressed up in clown makeup?

The Savoyards have made unusual concepts work in the past: "The Mikado" in a museum, "Patience" in the early 1960's, "Ruddigore" in a B-grade horror movie. This vivid, stylized "Pinafore"-in-a-circus shows every sign of playing well to our enthusiastic early audiences -- but you've got to see it for yourself to believe it.

While remaining entirely faithful to the original script and music, director and choreographer Derrick Ivey's approach now is influenced by (among others) the styles of Cirque du Soleil and hobo clown Emmett Kelly. We can safely say you've never seen a "Pinafore" like this one.

"H.M.S. Pinafore" is one of the most-loved musical theater pieces of the English-speaking world. Even if you've never seen it, you may have heard TV or movie references: in "The West Wing", "Star Trek", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", and even 2006's "The Good Shepherd" (in which Matt Damon sings "I'm Called Little Buttercup"). This is a classic piece of theater.

This video by Darryl & Mary Freedman shows selected scenes from the dress rehearsal of HMS Pinafore.

A couple of members have made a short video of excerpts from our dress rehearsal - you can see the moving colors on YouTube.
