Trial by Jury Fall and The Best of Gilbert and Sullivan 2008

Trial by Jury

Synopsis: Crowds gather to witness the trial of Edwin, sued by Angelina for breach of promise of marriage. The Jurors don't seem to be very sympathetic toward Edwin. Nor does the Usher, desperately trying to keep order. The Judge, after telling about his own roguish past, gets the trial under way. The Jury is sworn, and the Plaintiff enters dazzling everyone with her charm, after which her Counsel gives an impassioned address to the Jury. After much legal wrangling and pondering of their puzzling dilemma, a surprising turn of events sets everything right.

The Best of Gilbert and Sullivan

Some of our favorite songs from the G&S canon:

Never Mind the Why and Wherefore (H.M.S. Pinafore) - Captain Corcoran and Sir Joseph Porter remind Corcoran's daughter Josephine that love can overcome the class differences between her and her lordly suitor Sir Joseph. But their arguments only serve to embolden her love for lowly sailor, Ralph Rackstraw.

Three Little Maids from School (The Mikado) - Yum-Yum, Peep-Bo, and Pitti-Sing return from a ladies' seminary to their home town of Titipu for Yum-Yum's impending marriage to her guardian, Ko-Ko.

Oh, Goddess Wise (Princess Ida) - Princess Ida, having founded a women's university, calls on Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom, to give her fervent words to inspire her students.

I Am a Maiden (Princess Ida) - Prince Hilarion and his companions, Cyril and Florian, disguise themselves to invade a women's university, taking a brief interlude to get into character.

Time Was When Love and I Were Well Acquainted (The Sorcerer) - The vicar Dr. Daly, an aging and lonely bachelor, reminisces about his ardent youth when he was an attractive young curate.

I Hear the Soft Note of the Echoing Voice (Patience) - Released from their collective adoration of the poet Bunthorne, all the maidens in the village return to their former suitors among the Heavy Dragoons.

Dance a Cachucha (The Gondoliers) - The Venetian gondoliers have been sent to the island kingdom of Barataria so that their leaders, Marco and Giuseppe, can assume the throne jointly. Their wives and sweethearts, forbidden to accompany them, soon follow after them anyway, inspiring a lively celebration with much dancing and drinking.

As Before You We Defile (The Grand Duke) - Members of an acting troupe enter in Greek style to celebrate the wedding of Ludwig and Julia.

Spurn Not the Nobly Born (Iolanthe) - Lord Tolloller, backed by the House of Lords, begs the lovely young shepherdess Phyllis not to look down on them as suitors just because they are highborn.

Sir Rupert Murgatroyd (Ruddigore) - Dame Hannah tells how a curse was placed on the first Baronet of Ruddigore, whose descendants must forever commit a crime every day lest they die a horrible death.

Strange Adventure (The Yeomen of the Guard) - Doomed to be executed on a false charge, Colonel Fairfax hastily married a hired bride to thwart his greedy heir. Rescued from his cell by his old comrade Sergeant Meryll, the disguised Fairfax has just learned his unknown bride's identity. He laments the fate of a young maiden who would marry a man about to die.

Eagle High (Utopia, Limited) - The South Sea island nation of Utopia has remodeled its government and society after the example of Great Britain. At a festive ball to celebrate the transformation, they sing an anthem which exhorts the wielding of might against the mighty, not against the meek.
